As someone that's dealing with forklifts for the first time, I'm looking into potential coatings to protect them from rust or dirt. Is there something specific or can I use some of the generic stuff you'll find at your local hardware store?

Ah, forklifts. I remember my first time dealing with them, always seemed like there was something to worry about, rust being at the top of the list. Unfortunately, generic stuff from the hardware store might not cut it for long term protection. It's tempting to take the easy route, but the harsh conditions these machines face tend to eat through coatings faster than you'd like.
I'd recommend looking into specialized industrial coatings designed for heavy machinery. They cost a bit more, but they'll give the kind of protection they actually need. I wish someone had told me that sooner, but we learn as we go, right?

You can use basic sprays like Rust Oleum or Fluid Film for general rust and dirt protection, its good enough for most cases and in rough environments, consider heavier duty coatings like epoxy or rubberized undercoat

For equipment that costs thousands and works in tough environments, relying on generic hardware store coatings is a gamble. Forklifts deserve industrial-grade protection, rust doesn't care if you're new to the game or not.
